On the 27th November 2024, the Sedibeng District GBVF Rapid Response Task Team (RRTT) marked the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children with an Orange Day Walk. The event, held in Boipatong, not only brought to attention the district’s commitment to ending GBVF but it also commemorated World AIDS Day which is observed annually on December 1, to raise awareness of the continued fight against HIV/AIDS.
This initiative was organized in collaboration with key partners, brought together the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Sedibeng Community Safety, Sedibeng District AIDS Council, Emfuleni Public Safety, COGTA/CDWs, Provincial GBVF, Randwater, and many other stakeholders, including community policing forums and youth crime prevention desks.
In her address, the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Lerato Maloka urged the community of Sedibeng to take action. "It’s important for all of us as a community to stand up and break the silence and speak out, report GBVF, and support those affected by HIV/AIDS without stigma," she declared. Mayor Maloka also emphasized the interconnectedness of the fight against GBVF and the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, calling for the community to embrace compassion and inclusivity.
The day’s activities included an awareness walk, door-to-door engagements, advocacy sessions, and the painting of walls with orange symbols of peace. Participants donned vibrant orange T-shirts and caps, while marching from the Boipatong Hall to the Boipatong Monument. Partners such as Nkanyezi Private Hospital, Sedibeng District SAPS Social Crime Prevention, and the LGBTIQ community provided critical resources, support, health services and HIV/AIDS education.
The Orange Day walk, coupled with the commemoration of World AIDS Day, is a powerful reminder of the need for unity in tackling societal challenges. 90% of women experience some form of GBVF in their lifetime, and the stigma around HIV/AIDS that stops many from getting treatment. The Sedibeng District GBVF RRTT and its partners remain steadfast in their mission to create a society where equality, safety, and health are priorities for all.
